Alyssa and Zachary were married on a warm Sunday afternoon in late September. In the small garden behind The Inn at 835, they said their vows in front of an intimate group of family and friends as the song of joy and laughter filled the air.
Surrounded by the bridal party, the bride began hair and makeup early that morning in one of the Inn’s beautiful hospitality areas. Keeping with simple and classic, the ladies chose elegant up-does to accent their navy-blue dresses and flower décor. The couple chose to not do a First Look so the time was filled with giddy smiles and anticipation of the upcoming ceremony. After dressing in one of the boutique suites, the bride shared a quiet moment with both Mom and Dad. Everyone enjoyed and relishing in the moments prior to Dad walking her down the aisle. After having experienced a health scare the year prior, the day was a reminder to everyone to cherish the time we have with parents and loved ones.
While brief, the ceremony was the perfect mix of nostalgia, walking down the couples past together, and blessings for the future. It touched on Zac’s first proposal with a bread tie and then his realistic one later down the road. This one she gladly accepted and it began plans for the very day.
The wedding party and family gathered for quick family photographs in the garden immediately following the ceremony. The bridal crew were fantastic in their ability to enjoy a libation and some humorous photographs, while turning around and creating stunning portraits in the next breath.
Upon completion, the bridal party were received by a jovial crew that was ready to dance and celebrate with the couple in the Inn’s royal ballroom. Being a smaller party, I was able to circle the crowd capturing fun and candid portraits of the guests as they were asked questions and advice about marriage for the new couple.
Later that evening as guests gathered around the front entrance for a sparkler send-off. It was the perfect remind that while the world will never stop moving forward or changing, for but a moment we can have the company of all we hold dear. For but a moment, everything can be right in the world.

Brook and Jason were married on a beautiful crisp fall day in mid October. As the leaves were turning colors and warm beverages started to make one feel cozy, they tied the knot to begin their new life together as husband and wife. Surrounded by friends and family, the day began with bridal party hair and makeup at the Hyatt Hotel in Downtown Springfield. Enjoying breakfast mimosas and a first look with the bridal party and Dad, the Bride and Groom opted for a first look so they could enjoy group photographs prior to the ceremony. Dressed in dapper tuxes and elegant fall-colored dresses, the wedding party laughed and piled in the party bus en route to the Venue at 1929 for pictures prior to the ceremony. Enjoying fall themed photographs at the venue, they warmed in sunshine from the floor-to-ceiling windows. After a small ceremony attended by close family, friends, and possibly the cutest flower girls and ring-bearers ever, the couple moved to the Illinois State Capitol Building for just a few pictures in the setting sun before proceeding to Arlington's Historic Venue for evening festivities. Warmly received by guests ready to celebrate, everyone enjoyed diner and dancing in the cozy venue where for a moment ... everything was right in the world.
Beautifully decorated, the day was the perfect mix of fall colors, feels, and vibes, paired with the love of close friends and family. As these two prepare to celebrate their first anniversary, I'd love to share some memories from the day their stories merged into one.

Alicia and Dylan were married on a beautiful fall afternoon in late October. It was a beautiful event that included many traditional moments of their faith, but also many items that made the day a truly personalized celebration. There were so many amazing moments, the wedding blog had to be broken into chapters!
Doing a first look beforehand, it allowed the wedding party to really have some fun with their photos. Both fans of The Lord of the Rings, they wanted to add a sword. Yup, a sword! My reply was, "This will be exciting!" It WAS! In all the best ways! We did the first look, captured some glorious photographs of the bridal party, then moved to a grove of trees for a few more with the couple.
Primarily shooting weddings, I get a lot of questions about traditions and etiquette with couples adding their own things. This couple had the perfect meld. They had a traditional Lutheran ceremony with all the moments one thinks of for a wedding, but also some fun beforehand with just the two of them! Enjoy!

Abigail & Jacob were married on a beautiful summer afternoon at a hometown church outside Peoria, IL. Surrounded by loved ones, the day began with the bride and bridesmaid's hair and makeup in the hotel bridal suite, enjoying breakfast mimosas and a first look with the girls before the days activities. Dressed in dapper blue tuxes, the men gathered at the church and prepared a John Deere 4020 tractor for the couple's exit after the ceremony. Afterwards, the couple enjoyed pictures outdoors at the family farm before moving to the Riverfront Gateway building in Peoria, Illinois where they were warmly received by guests for evening celebrations. Dinner and dancing followed with the couple ending their night with one last night portrait overlooking the Peoria Riverfront.
Tastefully decorated, the day was the perfect mix of simple beauty paired with intimate moments surrounded by family and friends. From a ceremony performed by a brother, to doggie treats as wedding favors, the day was blessed with the faith, heritage, people (and dogs), that were important and helped color the couples lives with love and laughter.

Todd and Kang were married on a beautiful spring afternoon at their local church in Springfield, IL. Surrounded by close friends, the day began with pictures at Washington Park then progressed to a small ceremony at a local church. Thanks to technology and video conferencing, everyone was able to attend including loved ones across the ocean. A love that will truly not be stopped by geography, the day and ceremony were a joyous celebration of faith, love, and new beginnings as husband and wife.

The weather forecast took a turn and there are now showers predicted on and off all weekend. This is a high risk-high reward forecast when it comes to photographs. If it doesn't rain and it's overcast, that is the absolute BEST lighting to shoot in so we're going to go ahead and proceed as planned and reschedule on a case-by-case basis if needed. I'll call individual sessions and reschedule in need be.

Location: Washington Park Botanical Gardens
Our shooting location will be at the Washington Park Botanical Gardens this year! Easy and simple to find, I'll meet you at the bench right before the entrance to the Botanical Gardens Building. Park by the fountain, and we'll be shooting right around that area.
Point of Contact
Park by the fountain, and proceed to the Botanical Gardens building. Friday and Saturday Sarah will be sitting on the bench by the entrance ready to check you in. Sunday, it'll be myself (Laura!) meeting you at the bench.
Time
Session will be beginning at the scheduled times so please plan to arrive just a few minutes early so everyone can relax, stretch their legs, and take in the scenery.
Portrait Packages
For the normal Mini Session package, the "day of" payment is $95. This includes 3 digital downloads of the 10 images provided and additional items available for order.
For those that like ALL the images from the session, the Entire Collection of images (retails at $275) is available for a reduced price of $175 that day ONLY. This includes all of the best images from the session and full digital downloads with print release (usually 20-40 Images). If you'd like to pay anything beforehand via cards, just let me know and I'll send an email invoice.
Confirmation
To confirm you slot, please text your name to (217) 653-7219. This will also give me your cell-phone and vice/versa. You'll receive a text back with your time and the address. If everything matches, you're good to go!

Jade and Seth celebrated the joy of their marriage on a beautiful sunny day in July in an open-air ceremony surrounded by fresh air and flowers. Preparing for the event at the Wyndham Hotel City Centre in downtown Springfield, they choose the site of the Train Station (Springfield Union Station) for first look pictures and the sunflower fields at Jim Edgar State Park for the ceremony. They finished the evening with a reception at Arlington's Restaurant also located in Springfield, Illinois. The intimate outdoor ceremony was beautiful as family and friends shared with the couple as they said their wedding vows to the backdrop of golden sunflowers. The reception was a celebration of fun, joy, and family, as guests enjoyed breakfast for dinner and dancing the night away. The couple closed out the night posing for one last photograph in front of the building before they began their new adventure together as husband and wife.
What I really love about these two is that they show up. Not just physically, but emotionally as well. From the first sit-down with them, I liked how they were focused on what was important and always had the most important thing in mind: the end goal of marrying their best friend. With temps hovering around 100 the day of the ceremony, I saw this full-circle. The couple focused on the most important thing and always ended up laughing in each-other's arms–content in just the company of the other. While the day progressed beautifully and ended romantically with them walking into their new life hand-n-hand, it was just a simple reminder that behind all the gayla and celebration is the reminder of the simple contentment someone's company can bring. For life, love, & the newlyweds!

I had the most wonderful evening capturing a themed Lifestyle Session on a farm in Payson, Illinois. Having done multiple family sessions together, Katie wanted to do something fun with her kids that would capture their childhood joy and excitement. We decided on a superhero themed Lifestyle Session that included smoke bombs for extra fun. Shooting for one or two portraits a piece of them wearing the costumes, we let them run wild and just captured the action at play.

Location: SECOND Rabe Farm (NOT the one I grew up on)
Our shooting location will be at the Second Rabe Farm this year! The location out in the country with the red barns that we've shot at previously. Since these barns are well over a hundred years old and legit, please be aware and watch children closely before and after shoots. I'll text you the address.

Upon arrival, you will pull in the driveway right by the farm house. Have a seat on the front porch and that's where you'll check in.
Time

Katie and Caleb became Mr. and Mrs. on a beautiful warm Saturday afternoon at St. Peter's Church located in Quincy, Illinois. Surrounded by family and friends, they said wedding vows as loved ones watched with smiles. The wedding was a celebration of fun, joy, and family. Guests visited and took in the beautiful church then moved to the Casino Starlight Lounge for a reception and further celebration. The wedding party proceeded to South Park where they were champs and did wedding party pictures in record time. Good sports, they smiled and celebrated with their newly married friends as the temperatures hovered around 100 degrees. Proceeding to the reception, speeches were given by the best man and maid of honor, which were both siblings of the bride and groom. Dinner and dancing followed with first dances and the couple playing the shoe game.
What I really loved about Katie and Caleb was that you could easily tell they valued relationships. Surrounded by an incredibly strong network of family and friends, many people didn't know each other but all loved the couple and did everything they could to honor the event. The day went flawlessly as everyone pitched in and made sure the happy couple enjoyed the day. Thank you Katie and Caleb for including me in on such a beautiful event. While the dresses, tuxes, and flowers were beautiful, it was the meaning behind everything that truly shown through and made the day radiant. It was an honor to be included.

While there are many blog posts about making the most out of wedding shows, also referred to as bridal fairs and bridal shows, I'm going to give a few tips and tricks to make the most of THIS show. Doing a variety of shows across the mid-west, I've narrowed down my attendance to this show in particular. Exceptionally well-produced, the Elegant Bridal Expo has all the perks of the traditionally-produced shows ... plus a few more!
Here are my personal suggestions for getting the most of this upcoming show on Sunday:
1. Arrive EARLY
I've seen it all when it comes to wedding show swag bags etc. Usually they are a grocery tote bag full of business cards and flyers. Ya ... pass. Not here. Doing wedding shows for over 10 years, these are by far the best swag bags I've ever seen! Get there early and be one of the first 200! You'll suffer mad FOMO if you don't.
2. Do research beforehand.
Each attending bride receives $500 in Bridal Bucks to spend with vendors. Doing research beforehand and knowing the vendors can cash in on some awesome show specials.
3. Play the Bingo game that's provided!
Upon arrival, each bride will be give a bingo card to have vendors stamp as they go around. In the past I've had client's win mad prizes from doing this.

This year's show perk will be a complimentary Website and Guest Favor Cards. Ideal for guests with many out-of-town guests, it provides a personalized domain name and custom-build website to share wedding images with family and friends via direct download. Rylie and Nick captured their engagement session one beautiful summer evening on the shores of Lake Decatur right outside The Beach House restaurant and bar. Together, they enjoyed the setting sun and passing walkers while we chatted about the upcoming wedding and the surrounding boaters. Boat people themselves, I loved hearing about lake life and their future plans. I loved their classic style as they spent time laughing and joking with each-other. Miriam and Matt were married in an indoor ceremony one beautiful early spring afternoon at Edward's Place Historic Home located in Springfield, Illinois. The wedding party photographs were captured to the backdrop of early morning sunshine at the Illinois State Capitol building. Surrounded by family and friends, the couple said their vows and began their new life together as Mr. & Mrs. in an intimate indoor ceremony surrounded by the love of family and the history present at the mansion. The wedding was a celebration of fun, joy, and family. Guests visited and took in the celebration as they danced and visited at Temple Israel. The couple wrapped up the wedding celebration posing for one last set pf portraits underneath the Selvaggio Historic Arches before concluding the wedding festivities.

Jade and Seth are a fantastic fun-loving couple that own a zoo of furry animals and enjoy laughing and adventuring together. The event was an outdoor photo session captured at the Dana Thomas House Located in Springfield, Illinois and the Lincoln Memorial Gardens located in Chatham, Illinois. I loved their classic style as they spend time laughing and joking in each-other's arms. One thing I learned about these two is that life is an adventure to be enjoyed. No matter what life brings, they remember that who you're with can change everything. Thank you so much you two for letting me capture such a fun time in your lives. Preparing for the event at the Wyndham Hotel City Centre, also in downtown, they choose the site of the Old State Capitol Building for their first look and family pictures. The weather was perfect, providing a layer of clouds for naturally diffused light. The reception was a celebration of fun, joy, and family. Guests visited and took in the history and exhibits as they danced the night away. The couple closed out the night posing for one last photograph in front of the library as a light spring rain arrived.

Oh how I love Senior Portrait Sessions! Lydia is a 2019 graduate of Quincy Senior High and a cross country track and field athlete that was named 2017 All Area Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. For the session, we started out at South Park to take in the green and foliage, then moved to Flynn Stadium to capture her in her essence. It was funny, I almost thought she was shy until the track uniform came out. Suddenly, a different energy filled the space with a confidence and passion that hadn't been there previously. It was the neatest thing to witness and allowed me to capture her smile, personality, and love for running. She truly came out of the shell the minute she put on the running shoes and the experience of capturing that passion was amazing! A Quincy Blue Devil, she's made a place for herself in the high school athletic.
I thought it was interesting, because she didn't talk about her accomplishments, but the way she held herself differently in uniform made me wonder. A. Lot. A little research and I was able to find out that she was the All Conference Champion of the Western Big 6 in 2017, All Conference 1600 and 3200 meters Champion for 2016-2017, and the Spring 2017-2018 All Conference 1600 and 3200 meters Champion. The list went on and on, so I've included it below.
Lydia holds three school records at Flynn Stadium and plans to continue running in college. Graduating this year, she will continue on to run for Memphis into her college career. It was absolutely the neatest thing being able to capture this time and we definitely had some fun on the track with the lighting. I absolutely loved everything about the evening; a chance to celebrate with someone the conclusion of a chapter of their life marked with passion and dedication, the stories of races ran, it was fantastic to just breathe it all in.
Congrats, Lydia, for completing the 2019 season and enjoy Memphis!

I’ve been needing to blog this session for a while and today seemed like the perfect day to capture it properly. Amy and Michael’s session was absolutely fantastic! Not just from the logistics perspective of life, composition and color, but them. Them. While they were both nervous about being photographed, they adapted beautifully as we laughed about the engagement questionnaire and stories of their past that brought them to the present. We explored Forest Park, had a glass of wine at the Boathouse, and they danced on the dock as the music from a band drifted in the night breeze. They were fully present for every moment, and I was truly honored to capture it.

Katie and Caleb were a fantastic couple to spend the afternoon with while we captured their engagement session. The event was an outdoor photo session captured Riverview Park in Hannibal, Missouri. Right off the batt, I realized this couple was legit. Like, totally awesome legit. Caleb worked nights, and had just gotten up, and the day was freezing. It then started to rain right after we started. Always making the most of every situation, they laughed about the weather and cuddled close. While it was a cold afternoon, it was a beautiful time and a pleasure spending time with them. Looking forward to a 2019 wedding.

Amelia and Adam were a fantastic couple to spend the evening with while we captured their engagement session. The event was an outdoor photo session captured at their home in Springfield, Illinois and the Sugar Creek Covered Bridge in Glenarm, Illinois. Their delightful daughter was captured in a few at the beginning in their home. Then, we moved out to the covered bridge near Chatham for the engagement session. Something I really love about these two is that they have a great sense of humor and love to laugh. Their energy and commentary was refreshing and you can't help but be in a good mood being around them. It was a beautiful time and a pleasure spending the evening with them in anticipation of their upcoming summer wedding.
Michele and Clint were married on a cool September afternoon at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Quincy, Illinois. Quincy natives, their event was decorated with beautiful refurbished antiques and furniture redone by Michele herself. Surrounded by family and friends, they said their vows and began their new life together as Mr. & Mrs. in an intimate ceremony at the church in town, then proceeded out to the family farm for pictures and festivities. The wedding was a celebration of fun, joy, and family. Guests visited and took in the breathtaking views as they danced the night away in an outdoor tent overlooking the countryside.

Perfect for both milestones and family sessions, we capture the honoree in whatever stage they're in, doing the things they love. I adore this family because they're so real to life. Children being children and parents being parents, bundled up in the love that creates the connection we call family. Mom wanted to capture the smiles and interactions she sees at this age, so we let them play and choose the activities. Swinging, climbing, and tickling, we captured a few good portraits of the family, then let the kids pile on the blanket as the sun set in the distance.

The weather forecast took a turn and there are now showers predicted on and off all weekend. This is a high risk-high reward forecast when it comes to photographs. If it doesn't rain and it's overcast, that is the absolute BEST lighting to shoot in so we're going to go ahead and proceed as planned and reschedule on a case-by-case basis if needed.
In the Case of Rain - UPDATED 10/4
In the case of rain, reschedules will be available for Monday October 8th, Friday October 19th, and Saturday morning October 20th. Make sure to confirm via telephone ( see below) so I have you cell number and I'll call you if anything changes.

I adore this family because we just roll with whatever unfolds and it always ends up beautiful. This time the honoree was Davney and her twelve month milestone. The youngest of three, she fits in with her laughter and smiles. Mom already had a nice family portrait, so the objective was fun and capturing Davney doing what she loves best, spending the summer playing with older brother and sister and laughing at their funny glasses. We themed the session summer. Wanting to get a cute one of her in the tub, we restricted her from going in the back yard while letting her watch her brother and sister sit in the tub. She suddenly wanted to play in the yard and get in the tub. Huh. Jumping through the sprinkler, the kids laughed and played as we enjoyed the last of summer and the celebration of this moment.

When Rich and Christina selected Chicago City Life as a theme for their engagement session, I got really excited. Starting on the pier by The Adler Planetarium and The Filed Museum, we slowly moved through the city taking out time and stopping at points that were important for the couple. I was really excited about this shoot because the entire session was done at night. Using off-camera flash and tripods to capture the city lights, it was an adventure in night-life, flash photography, and all things romance.

Captured in a back yard, we do what we call a Lifestyle Session because we never know what's going to happen ... except life, and a session. Perfect for milestones, we capture the honoree in whatever stage they're in, doing the things they love. I adore this family because we just roll with whatever unfolds and it always ends up beautiful. This time the honoree was Davney and her nine month milestone. The youngest of three, she already fit in well with her laughter and smiles. Playing in the backyard, older brother dug a hole while we captured some of Davney, and sister sat nearby and told me about school. I photograph whatever they wanted and then show them the pictures. They got the idea so they show me more. Intermittently, I ask them to stand specifically when I'm photographing whatever treasure they're presenting (because I'm really getting a close-up of their face and that huge grin). We laugh and move on. We move to the front and capture some of the family in front of the house. Life and houses change, so we wanted to capture them in this particular stage as a growing family in their first home. They pose in the yard for one last good image of the family then the two older ones ask about supper. We smile for one more and put away the camera.
Cady and Micheal were a fantastic couple to spend the evening with while we captured their engagement session. The event was an outdoor photo session captured at the Sugar Creek Covered Bridge in Glenarm, Illinois and Washington Park Botanical Gardens in downtown Springfield. They met when both were employed by a local car dealership and Cady's desk was moved to the service department while the accounting department underwent renovations. Micheal laughed as he retold the story and it made me smile just thinking about it. She said she always eyed him, but thought he had a girlfriend because he talked about spending time with Autumn. Autumn is the smaller black dog in the photographs. Needless to say, I'm pretty sure it was all cleared up! Both avid dog lovers, we decided to include them in the session as part of the family. Here are some great tips to consider when including pets in photographs. It was a beautiful evening, and a pleasure getting to know these two in anticipation of their upcoming summer wedding.
P.s. A special shout out to the people behind the scenes that help make events like this happen. These two wonderful folks met us at the park and played the role of Dog Whisperers so the above images could be captured. Thanks so much for all your hard work! It was definitely not a "walk in the park" (haha), but really paid off. Thanks again!
What a great time it was getting to know Stacey and Cody at their engagement session. The event was an outdoor photo session captured in the country outside Quincy, Illinois on the family farm. Both in school to become Veterinarians, I realized how tough these two were when they agreed to shoot in temperatures near freezing. Not native to the area, we had a short window to capture both of them together for an engagement session in-between traveling for their last year of school. They were down for the challenge, and it paid off with some beautifully captured smiles. Watching their passion for life and each other play out through the conversations in the session, it was wonderful listening to them recounted early memories of their relationship. Hard workers that have the bravery to dream and build those dreams into reality, I have no doubt that the life they create together will be nothing less than amazing. Congratulations to the new Mr. & Mrs. and blessings for their big adventure!
Kaleena and Logan are a very fun loving and playful couple that enjoy spending time outdoors. They always seem to be having a wonderful time as long as it involves fresh air and family.They were true to their farm and hunting passions by taking photos at the family farm south of Quincy. With a traditional Catholic mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church and a reception following at the Ambiance in Quincy, IL., this wedding was a great celebration of fun, love, and family.
One of the things I really enjoyed about this wedding was the infusion of personal items that were special to them. The location of the photographs, making sure we captured one with their dog, special family gifts that were tied into the events of the day to honor loved ones- it was a truly fantastic celebration of love, life, and relationships.

I love this family because we just roll with whatever unfolds and it always ends up beautiful. This time the honoree was Davney and her three month milestone. The latest addition to the family, she already fit in well with her laughter, joyous sounds, and smiles. Starting before supper, I came over and let the kids get used to me chatted with them while they played in their playhouse. From here, they show me their pumpkins, rocks, or any other dear treasures worthy of photographing. I photograph whatever they want and then show them the pictures. They get the idea so they show me more. Intermittently, I ask them to stand specifically when I'm photographing them with their rock (because I'm really getting a close-up of their face and that huge grin). We laugh and move on. Mom comes out of the house with Davney in her new adorable sweater and sister and mom do some girl's portraits. We ask Jacob to, "make Davney smile" so he takes his fingers and tries to make her mouth smile. We laugh and Davney really does smile. Asti the cat investigates the whole ordeal from the house. Alyssa usually wants a picture with him and he eyeballs me. He knows what's coming. The two older ones tell me about their new sister and I take some more photographs. Jacob gets a little excited and sheds a tear when he gets knocked over. I sneak a photograph. They pose in the chair for one last image of the three of them as they continue to tell me all the new exciting things about Davney as she grows bigger and gets older.
2018 Quincy Area Bridal Magazine (QABM) Wedding Show
We had a great time this past weekend in Quincy, Illinois at the 2018 Quincy Area Bridal Magazine Wedding Show at the Oakley Lindsey Civic Center (OLCC) held January 13, 2018. It was a beautifully produced event with a great turnout. The amazing Becky, Cheyenne, and myself, were able to unveil the new 2018 brochure to the Quincy area and had a fantastic time hearing the wedding plans. It was nice to put some faces to names and the dimmed lights and ambiance of the OLCC put everyone in the party mood.
Quincy has some different specials going on than normal, so make sure to check the back of your brochure for those specials. The show special usually runs for only 10 days after the show, but I'll be extending it this year since I was a little late following up emails after the show. I've been asked about it a lot, but will NOT be at the show at The Ambiance later this month due to a prior engagement. This was our last show of the season.
We were excited to be able to use the new 16-page magazine brochure to hand out instead of a traditional price sheet. It was fun to place that many already captured beautiful images into the hands of each excited bride we met.
Once again, it was an older image on the back that was the favorite to talk about. After explaining how I did it to so many people, I've posted the rough version below so you can see my hand both at the beginning (bottom) of the sparkler trail and at the end (top). I usually photoshop that out before delivering it to clients, but it made a great conversation piece at the show.

If I attend any of the shows this year, is there any incentive to book at the show?
Absolutely. Each show is different depending on the show special, so make sure to swing by the booth to see what great show specials are going on. For Quincy, the special ends the 23rd is extended through February 7th. As noted before, I will NOT be at the show at The Ambiance in Quincy on January 28, 2018. This was the last show of the year for us. While we told everyone about it at the booth, feel free to email me if you don't remember the 2018 Wedding Show Photography Package. There was a lot going on that night.
How do I check if my date is available and get more information?

If we like it, but are not sure we want to book yet, what's next?

You'll literally spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than your spouse, so "clicking" with them is essential. I want to hear about how you interact as a couple (Are you a private couple or more affectionate in public?), how the relationship came to be (... there's always a story!), and the the plans for the wedding day. Having only one shot at choosing a photographer to capture that day for you, I won't book weddings that have a sparkler sendoff, if I don't know how to do one. (Fortunately, we've got that area covered.) This phone call also gives us a chance to go over specifics of the package you're looking at, carving out what you don't need, and quote the exact price you'd be spending at the end of the day. From there, sleep on it, shop around, or go get your nails done! ... then call me. Booking is a three step process consisting of: 1.) Initial email - Do you like the way I work and my style? 2.) Phone call - Is my style something that could deliver your envisioned wedding pictures? 3.) Thinking about it, letting me know, and reserving the date with the $300 booking deposit.

2018 WDBR Central Illinois Wedding Show (Bridal Extravaganza)
Had a great time this past weekend in Springfield, IL at WDBR's 2018 Bridal Extravaganza at the Crown Plaza. The wonderful Caitlyn and myself were able to unveil the new 2018 brochure which went over wonderfully and we had a fantastic time hearing about all the wedding plans. It was nice to put some faces to names and the five hour show gave us time to talk to a lot of people individually. Thanks so much to everyone that stopped by! My voice is gone from talking so much, but it was all wonderfully worth it.
I wasn't able to post it previously, so if you scroll down, there's a quick Q&A about shows and some special booking promotions going on through the month of January.
We was really excited to be able to use the new 16-page magazine brochure to hand out instead of a traditional price sheet. It was so fun to place that many already captured beautiful images into the hands of each excited bride we met.
Ironically, it was an older image on the back that was the favorite to talk about. After explaining how I did it to so many people, as promised, I've posted the rough version below so you can see my hand both at the beginning (bottom) of the sparkler trail and at the end (top). What fun! Fully open to new night challenges like this if anyone has a vision in mind!

Outdoor fall family photos captured at the Mini Session event this year. Thanks Nathan & Missy for coming out and letting me capture another year of smiles and fun interactions. It's so crazy watching the beautiful little girl grow. How fast she changes. Below are a few of my favorite from the session.
Outdoor fall family photos captured in the country outside Quincy, Illinois. I met this beautiful family when Jessica contacted me about a photo event I was holding. Chatting with her beforehand, I heard the concern of a mother with beautiful children that might not respond well to the camera, but loved exploring and adventure. Feeling like these concerns could be felt across the spectrum of Mini Session clients (all of which had small children for this event), I decided to model the design for this session more around what the main subjects wanted to do: move. I'd change my course to follow the main subjects, curious feet that liked to see what was around every corner. Designing the session location with four or five photo op locations in a row spaced along a winding path (instead of just one), we simply let the children direct the location of the photographs, had mom and dad follow along, and took breaks whenever we came to a strategically planned blanket or place to sit. The results of this plan were absolutely fantastic and kept the children engaged every step of the way, producing many more beautiful photographs than a typical 15-minute one-location sitting would have. A new family to the Mini Session event this year, I particularly enjoyed watching this family interact and, I'm not sure if it was a poem or a book, but there was a story they could all say together that was just priceless and made everyone smile. Fall portrait session captured at Bob Mays Park in Quincy, Illinois. What a fun session this was. I wouldn't really call it a photo shoot, as much as I'd call it a documentary of our creek adventure. Living close to the park, Logan & Evie visit the creek often in search of adventures and treasure. This time I got to go along with my camera. We laughed, they showed me lots of cool rocks and fallen trees, and we captured a few memories along the way. Thanks Tracie for letting me tag along on a family adventure. I was honored to get a glimpse at the personalities of your awesome kids and hope the images live up to the honor. These are a few of my favorites from the session.

Sierra and Nicolas were a fantastic couple to spend the evening with while we captured their engagement session at Camp Illinek Boy Scout Camp in Springfield, Illinois. Their son was such a joy to photograph. He was a little ham for the camera and could literally not stop smiling. What a treat. We spent the evening on the boat dock, and exploring areas that were significant to Nicolas as he had completed his Eagle Scout years ago. It was a beautiful time and a pleasure spending the evening with them in anticipation of their upcoming summer wedding at Erin's Pavilion.
Adam + Sarah were married on a summer evening in an outdoor ceremony on the grounds of the Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook, Illinois. The ceremony took place as an intimate group of family and friends surrounded them on the terrace overlooking the lake. Adam and Sarah stood under a lavishly decorated chuppah as they exchanged rings, stomped on the glass, and had their first kiss as husband and wife. Continuing after the ceremony, the reception was held on the grounds as loved ones shared with the newly wed couple in a traditional Jewish Hora dance and lavish celebration at the campus’s reception venue beautifully decorated by Avant Gardenia.
Below are a few of my favorite from the images captured. Having known Sarah since college, this was an especially joyous wedding to celebrate and witness. Knowing Adam just a short time in comparison, he's everything and more one would wish for a good friend. Congrats Sarah and Adam on starting your life as Mr. and Mrs.!

I met Megan through an inquiry about family sessions. Megan and Matt were new to the Springfield, Illinois area and hadn’t had family photographs captured in awhile. Away from their roots, they wanted to capture photographs of the little ones at this age to share with loved ones. A consult concluded the Historic New Salem in Petersburg, Illinois a perfect place for the session with it’s rustic buildings and lush greenery. Being deserted in the evenings after 5PM, it provided the perfect park-like atmosphere for the little ones to run and explore away from any worry of traffic or distractions. Having moved around a lot for work, it also seemed the perfect fit and “welcome to the area” vibe the Midwest would extent with historic building and beautiful wild prairie flowers. Creating a shoot list and mentally preparing myself for the shoot, a Google search turned up an adorable Etsy Shop with very fun science t-shirts. Artsy science people? Oh please, I was excited. After a light sprinkle, the session proceeded wonderfully. We relaxed in the grass, fed the horse we determined was probably named Darth Vader, and their adorable son told me all about Storm Troopers. All good things smile-worthy. Thank you so much for letting me capture these moments for your beautiful family. I hope you enjoy the images as much as I enjoyed capturing them.
Jack's parents were the first wedding I photographed when returning to central Illinois. His mom and I grew up together with our moms exchanging plants and gardening tips. We feel like family, even without a share DNA.
As a good proud aunt, Jack is seriously cute. Check out those beautiful eyes. His pirate ways were plundering and pillaging his way through this shoot like a good almost 13 month old should. I loved being able to capture so many aspects of his childhood from his room to their mailbox to some of his favorite outdoor activities.
My favorite thing about capturing children is that they challenge your shooting abilities. Jack was actually incredibly upset through this entire shoot but lapsed into smiles and grins in-between. We made do with that, and that was enough.
I love photographing this family because it’s always different every time. Captured on a farm outside the city limits of Quincy, Illinois, the scenery is always beautiful. While the kids are photogenic, we do what we call a Lifestyle Session because it takes the kids a while to warm up to the camera. Less pressure when your goal is to capture life at this age for them … however that may be. Starting before supper, I came over and let the kids get used to me. This usually means sitting on the couch and paying them no attention while their mother makes supper. Their mother makes custom handmade items like knit sweaters and accessories, so sometimes I look through her projects and “Ooo” and “Ahh.” From here, they investigate me and sometimes I get my hair pulled or fingers in my ears. Sometimes Jack will show me some new fun toys or other items of interest. I show him my camera and how it takes pictures. We take some pictures of the latest toys, which are magnets and numbers. He loves his numbers. He shows me his sister and tells me she hasn’t been feeling well. She’s in a cranky mood. We take some pictures of her. She pouts (which is incredibly adorable in the photographs), and he thinks it’s funny (so I take some pictures of him laughing). We eat supper, and I set the camera on the table. By now, the kids are bored with it and myself—onto life as normal. After supper, Jack gets called to clean off his face. He yells … I take a picture of that incredibly adorable “mom face wipe.” We go outside and play in the field. Sitting in the grass as the sun goes down, the beautiful little family talks about things that make Jack happy, funny family memories, and snuggles with little sister. They give a few tickles and kisses and then head back to the house. The family photo session is done for the year and another round of beautiful photographs has been captured. Another chapter in the life of a growing family. Another set of priceless memories to enjoy as they grow up too fast.
Ashley and Kevin were married on a beautiful fall day at the Illini Country Club of Springfield, Illinois at half past five o’clock in the afternoon. They were married in early October in an intimate outdoor ceremony on the golf green surrounded by family and friends. Dressed in pale blush bridesmaids dresses with fresh flowers by Trendsetters Floral Inc. of Chatham, Illinois, the bridesmaids walked across the golf green greeting the groomsmen to the backdrop of the first golf tee. Bathed in the afternoon sun, surrounded by family and friends, the bride and groom said their vows as the trees and Mother Nature stood witness.

It’s that time of year again—fall Mini Session! If you’re looking to update those family portraits or get beautiful Christmas card pictures … all at a wonderful price, this is your chance!
What is a Mini Session?
That's a really good question! Mini Sessions are just that - a smaller photo session that comes with a smaller sitting fee and shooting time. While there is less time to shoot, most people find that the results are just as amazing and provide the necessities like the annual family photograph and some excellent individual photographs of everyone involved. I especially recommend them for families with children who might bore quickly of the whole photographing experience. How many photographs can you capture in 15 minutes? A lot. I've included some full example galleries from 2016 to answer that question. While the ordering and downloading features have been disabled,
these capture what type of photographs a full mini session would include.

Anna and David's engagement session was a mix of fun and deja vu. The couple met in high school and their first date was prom. This was awesome on so many levels. While we covered the expected romantic engagement photographs, we also included some fun poses re-creating some classic prom pictures and visiting places that had significant importance on Anna and David's journey to the alter. We started at Frank Lloyd Wright's Dana Thomas House in Downtown Springfield, then worked our way to Washington Park, ending the evening at Centennial Park as the sun set in the background of the last few photographs. This was an especially fun session because David was leery of being photographed. Engagement session are especially important in these situations. They serve as a dry-run of the wedding day and make the wedding day photo shoot natural and enjoyable. We do this by taking a trip down memory lane with each pose and location. People laugh naturally when remembering things that make them happy. Those nervous smiles become genuine laughter as the couple spends time in each others arms talking about the past and planning for the future. Brandi & Ross did a great job incorporating their son into the engagement picture process by allowing me to take a couple shots with him and having him help be a part of their save the dates. It's a great way to help your kids be part of the wedding planning process.

A great location for your photographs can really make your pictures stand apart. Chris & Bridget picked two great locations in the Old Springfield Captial building and Broadway Alley. These two are so much fun! I loved being able to capture the same pose in both their wedding and engagement sessions. It was neat to also capture location of their ceremony in their engagement session, too. I love their sense of personality and originality! Jesse & Meghan's Christmas time wedding is a great example that summer isn't the only great time of the year to get married. Check out the beauty in their outdoor shots! I love the vibrant red of her bouquet with the white of the landscape all around them. Plus, with choosing the Botanical Gardens for their wedding party photos, Meghan got the best of both worlds. She captured the quiet of the winter and the lush plants in the gardens. Breathtaking.
This lovely wedding was in the Hilton Hotel in Springfield, with pictures and a classy reception at The Inn at 835. There is something magical about seeing that ring on a groom's hand the first time. Where it was once missing an essential piece, it is now whole. This day was full of rich, vibrant red roses and absolute love. It was so evident the love Aaron has for his stunning bride. To many years of wedded bliss!
This was a wedding with so much style and personality. There were puzzles to play, tons of pop culture references and nods, and a joyful spirit as Meg & Sab celebrate their love in a way that was all their own. Thanks letting my capture your fun loving day!
I love getting to watch my favorite little people grow. Six month olds are so fun with all their new tricks- smiles, sitting up, rolling over....oh and did I mention that undeniable baby smell?!

There is something so uniquely special about newborns. From their squeaky cries, to the brand newness of their skin, to the absolutely breathtaking beautiful of their every perfect feature, newborns are truly special. In the first three days of life, babies are their most "moldable" because they retain their ability to be born and every part of their bodies are still adjusting to life outside Mom. For the most options in your newborn photos, babies should be photographed at that stage. However, Mommas and babies are barely out of the hospital at this point. Mommas, don't beat yourself up if your baby has cradle cap, jaundice, or you are too exhausted & overwhelmed to make it to the photographer. We make house calls and beautifully fattened up babies take equally breathtaking shots.
Meet sweet Jacob. I love all his beautiful dark hair. His precious little hands, his feet, not to mention all his tiny eyelashes! Couldn't you just snuggle him for hours?
Baby Alex is one lucky child. His parents have nothing but love and excitement for his arrival. Look at how beautifully glowing his momma, Allison, is! Waiting for your first child is an unforgettable chapter in a couple's life. Your parents pull out all your baby books and pictures, your house fills with tiny clothing and more baby equipment than BabiesRUs, and you count down the weeks by reading everything you can get your hands on about the miracle every growing and kicking inside. Every baby is a miracle and waiting for their arrivals are a special event to document. Your family changes every time you add a new member, no matter if they are the first or the seventh.
For this special session, we chose to highlight some of the special places Alex will be playing once he is here. Riverview Park in Quincy provided a great playground for a growing boy to climb, jump, and swing from those monkey bars. We also used the new mural that was painted on Jefferson Street as a way for baby Alex to remember how his town looked when he was born. This smart duo also planned ways to make this session work best for their needs with a photo to use as thank you notes. What a great way for his parents to share their special spot with their soon to be bouncing bundle of joy!
Doing wedding and engagement photography takes me all over the place while constantly shows me new things and new places. This session was no exception. Late October on a farm outside of Petersburg, Illinois, the spectacular backdrop for this unique story began to unfold.
I’ve known the bride-to-be for years, and was honored and excited when she asked me to capture this event for them. Both are highly involved in the livestock and cattle industry, so we wanted to include in the photographs places and things that meant something to the couple. For this reason, we did the traditional poses and shots, but also included props like the cattle tags with their wedding date to add that story telling element.
This is the amazing side to photography; you explore the world around you in new ways. You tour a country road you never explored or see a field from the other side of the private property sign. When doing sessions like these, I always think it’s important to cover your bases of the traditional shots like a newspaper announcement picture, but it’s also important as a photographer to capture the couple as the people they are and the places that mean the most to them; those amazing “off the beaten path” places down a country road.
Jeff and Elizabeth approached me about photographing a wedding almost a year ago. Being a close friend of the bride’s family, I was overjoyed and ecstatic about the honor of being asked to capture their wedding day. Like most couples, they were not professional models and were not comfortable posing in front of a camera. Jeff was hesitant to start, but by the end he may have just enjoyed himself!
While the self-perfect Facebook Selfie is cool for some, I don’t strive to capture that “thousand-mile stare” or the couple posing for Vogue. Together, we worked to capture the couple in all their honesty and giddiness at the aspect of getting married and sharing a life together. I felt we not only captured that idea, but so much more in the few hours we spent together. Engagement sessions are a fantastic way to help me learn more about you as a couple, highlight who you are together, and for you both to be comfortable with me before all the pressure of the big day. Plus, they are a braces-less replacement to your senior pictures on your mom's living room wall. (Let's be honest.)

We've all been there: trying to rush last-minute to get everything ready before a photo session. Sister bumps her head, brother is being a jerk ... yes. The realities of life. Life is not how we see in on Pinterest. In fact, Pinterest is nothing but an over-inflated view to make us feel inferior to the "rest of the world." (Or at least that's how I feel sometimes.) In the real world, you won't always have matching outfits and your children won't always be good moods. In fact, they never will.
When we did this session the little boy was doing what little boys do best: causing problems and making his sister cry. He tripped her, she fell and busted her face .. and that was the end of happy sister.
The good news was that they made up and loved the giant balloon I brought. Sessions are a lot like life in general. It's not about what you're given or what happens ... it's about what you do with it. We turned a disaster of a photo shoot into a good time and captured some wonderful photographs of this beautiful little family.
We even ended up getting a wonderful family shot for the Christmas card. It's not about having perfect moments in life and being able to capture them. Sessions are about making the moments perfect ... in all their chaos :) - Laura
This was an early November session- just perfect for Christmas cards! Just because it's winter, it doesn't mean we can't do outside photographs. We spent some time walking the bike path in Reservoir Park and settled on the perfect location a little off the path on the gravel part. It was little Bean's six month session and she was the most wonderfully-tempered baby I'd ever met. She just smiled and babbled the entire time. I've known Christie for years and it's so nice to see my childhood friends grow up with beautiful families of their own. {Quincy, IL Family Session}
I often get asked what to wear for photographs. While this seems like an easy question, it's really not. Gone are the days of matching pink polos with everyone wearing matching tan slacks and tops. "Be interesting ...be you!" is how I often respond when asked this question. While the family can wear whatever they wish for photographs, I tell them to look like themselves at their best. Wear colors that represent them. Colors are great and sometimes not everyone's colors are the same ... which is even better! No one family wears all matching cardigans in real life, why look like it in a photograph? Here are some recent session that branched out and went bold for the color combination. I think they all turned out fantastic and were rewarded greatly for the brave move by stunning color in their photos. Love the outfits everyone! So next time you wonder, "What should we wear for our family photographs?" Answer it with one word: clothes. LoL No, not really. I'll answer it with this ... "great colors and stylish clothes that reveal your family's style :)

The day started at the Hilton (previously Abraham Lincoln Hotel and Conference Center) where the bridal party got ready it one of the wonderful rooms provided. The bride was a glow of excitement while her bridesmaids joked with each other and prepared themselves. The wedding took place at St. John's Lutheran Church in Springfield, Illinois and was a vision of beauty and color. The couple and wedding party were photographed at the old Illinois State Capitol building where the staircases provided a wonderful backdrop and elegant arranging. The reception took place at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel and Conference Center where the reception was perfectly catered and organized by the staff. Alison & Brett's big day was planned down to the detail. The day started at the United Methodist Church of Petersburg in Petersburg, Illinois. The weather was perfect and warm with a 3:30 wedding planned for the afternoon. The church buzzed with excitement as the day had finally arrived for the highly-anticipated wedding ceremony of two very amazing people. After a brief but heart-felt ceremony, the couple chose various locations for group photographs in and around town like the Branson House Bed & Breakfast, with the festivities ending at the New Salem Center for the reception. The day concluded with family and friends enjoying the perfect summer evening in celebration of the new life created together. Thank you both for allowing me to be a part of capturing a lifetime of memories.
Colin & Erin tied the knot on July 6, 2012 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Quincy, Illinois. The whole day featured handcrafted touches from their wedding bands with fingerprints on the inside to a 1000 paper cranes that brought them good luck at their reception. The attendants and bride wore red shoes as another sign of good luck in Chinese custom. All of the guys wore handmade dichroic glass tie clips to compliment the wedding colors. A patient of the bride's created a beautiful prayer shawl for her and she wore her mother's veil. While the day's temperature hovered around a hundred degrees, it didn't phase the activity one bit. As a back-up to extreme summer temperatures, we captured photographs in the beautiful interior of Villa Catherine overlooking the Mississippi River.
The festivities concluded at the Holiday Inn located in Quincy, Illinois. At the reception, the candles on the tables were created by the mother of the bride with "Wu" etched in the glass on the front. The father of the bride created the picture in the background. The mother of the groom carried the Chinese cake topper back with her from Hong Kong. All the cranes were folded by the bride for good luck according to ancient Japanese legend. All 1000 were then given as favors to guests. Thank you for allowing me to be part of the day when Dr. Wu & Dr. O'Neal became Mr. & Mrs. Wu, may your wish be granted along with a lifetime of memories together.
